Workshop - The 'Senkaku' Islands territorial dispute between Japan, China and the Rights of the Ryukyuans

Abstract

The 'Senkaku' island issue has been disputed as a matter between Japan and China or Japan, China and Taiwan. The Ryukyuan people in Okinawa/ Ryukyus started to assert that they have the rights as indigenous peoples to self-determination about twenty years ago. From the Ryukyuans' perspective, the 'Senkaku' island issue will be discussed in this session.

About the Speaker 

Hideaki Uemura is Professor and Director of the Peace Culture Studies Institute at Keisen University, Japan. His research focuses on issues of human rights, indigenous people and ethnic minorities in East Asia. He currently serves as the President of the Shimin Gaikou Centre (Citizen’s Diplomatic Centre for the Rights of Indigenous People).
