Korea Institute Artists in Residence Series - Calligrapher Mr Kang Jang-Hyun

Kim Jang-Hyun was born in Kongju, in South Ch’ungch’ŏng province. He graduated from Kungmin University’s Graduate School in 2002 with a Masters in calligraphy and had his first solo exhibition that year at the Tŏgwŏn Gallery in Seoul’s primary art district Insa-dong. He’s had many solo exhibitions since, and participated in many international exhibitions at several of Korea’s most prestigious galleries, as well as overseas, including the Kuala Lumpur Art Expo (2007) and the Hong Kong Art Expo (2007). His work has come to include drawing the title calligraphies for the posters of popular TV dramas, and being a judge at numerous major calligraphy events. He has taught calligraphy at Hansŏng University since 2003, and at Ewha Woman’s University since 2008. Kim Jang-Hyun has been awarded on many occasions: he won two awards at both the Eastern Art Exhibition and the National Calligraphy Exhibition, and three awards at the Seoul Calligraphy Association Exhibition. In 1999 he won the Grand Prize at the 11th National Calligraphy exhibition.
