Japanese history through cinema series: The Men Who Tread on the Tiger’s Tail

TORA NO O WO FUMU OTOKOTACHI (The Men Who Tread on a Tiger’s Tail) Dir. Kurosawa Akira, 1945. 59 mins.

This rarely seen Kurosawa film was made just before the end of WWII, and managed to be banned by both the Imperial Japanese government and Gen. MacArthur’s postwar occupation government! It depicts one of the most famous episodes in Japan’s medieval history – the flight of the dashing young Minamoto Yoshitsune with his loyal retainers from the forces of his vindictive brother, the Shogun Yoritomo.
