Classic Japanese Film Series - Seishun zankoku no monogatari (The Cruel Story of Youth)

The Department of Pacific and Asian History and the Japan Institute are proud to present a series of politically, socially, and artistically significant films from Japan during the 1930s-1960s. The series features the early works of five of Japan’s greatest film directors.

Each film tackles the problems of daily life in modern Japan. Matters of sex, power, duty, familial bonds, and personal awakening are explored through each historical epoch. All films are English subtitled.

The final film of the series will be the 1960 film 青春残酷物語 (The Cruel Story of Youth), directed by Oshima Nagisa.
